The Neapolitan Quartet

novel cover series

The Neapolitan Quartet is an award-winning series of novels by Italian author Elena Ferrante. The series opens in 1950’s Naples and explores the lives of two young girls who grow up in that environment. The series follows the lives of these two women into the 21st century, documenting their coming-of-age. The culture surrounding local shops is a ubiquitous element of the environment in which the characters live, and thus provided the primary design inspiration for the cover series. Each individual cover also references a key plot point of the book. When lined up, the spines of the series form an image of two dolls, an important recurring motif in the novels.
